Date: 10 December 2025
Location: Cape Hotel, Mamba Point, Monrovia

Introduction

The rapid growth of digital technology has transformed communication, education, and social engagement. Yet, it has also created new vulnerabilities, particularly for women and girls. Digital harassment, cyberbullying, unauthorized sharing of personal information, and online exploitation are increasing threats that undermine safety, dignity, and well-being.

To address these challenges, the Muslim Congress of Liberia is hosting a one-day workshop on 10 December 2025 at the Cape Hotel in Monrovia, commemorating the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This year’s theme, “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” underscores the importance of protecting women and girls in digital spaces while promoting justice, dignity, and human rights.

Background

Digital spaces in Liberia, like in many parts of the world, have become both a tool for empowerment and a potential site of abuse. Women and girls often face online harassment, discrimination, and exploitation, affecting their mental health, personal safety, and ability to fully participate in society.

As a faith-based organization, the Muslim Congress of Liberia recognizing the role of Islamic values in promoting justice, compassion, and protection of the vulnerable. This workshop will seek to harmonize faith-based approaches with national and international efforts, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which aims to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, including digital abuse.

Overall Goal

The primary goal of the workshop is to contribute toward ending digital violence against women and girls, especially those from vulnerable and minority groups in Liberia. By raising awareness, promoting dialogue, and strengthening partnerships, the Muslim Congress aims to create safer digital spaces for all.

Specific Objectives

The workshop will focus on the following objectives:

Identify and educate on digital violence – Raise awareness of different forms of online abuse and their impacts on women and girls.

Develop culturally and religiously responsive mechanisms – Explore solutions rooted in Islamic principles and Liberian cultural contexts to prevent and respond to digital violence.

Promote inclusion and collaboration – Encourage collective action among faith leaders, community members, NGOs, government, and other stakeholders.

Strengthen synergies for SDG 5 – Coordinate with other actors to support Liberia’s national indicators for gender equality and the elimination of violence against women.

Expected Participants

The event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including:

  • Imams and Islamic scholars

  • Muslim students and women’s groups

  • Community leaders and activists

  • Representatives from NGOs, government agencies, and international partners

  • Foreign missions and policy makers

Why This Matters

Ending digital violence is not only a human rights imperative but also a moral and social responsibility. Islamic teachings emphasize justice (adl), protection of dignity (karama), and safeguarding the vulnerable. By integrating faith-based guidance with national policies, the Muslim Congress demonstrates that protecting women and girls is a shared duty of the entire community.

Looking Ahead

The Muslim Congress of Liberia invites all stakeholders and members of the community to join the workshop. Through dialogue, education, and collaboration, this event seeks to strengthen Liberia’s efforts in creating safer, inclusive digital spaces and advancing the protection and empowerment of women and girls.

Together, we can unite to end digital violence against all women and girls in Liberia.
